The Origins of
Colonial Balusters |
|
The Greeks and Romans did not
use balusters. They
were a
Renaissance innovation by Bramante in his Tempietto from
1502; but are commonly associated
with classical
architecture. The Romans
used cross pattern known as Roman Lattice or Transenna not balusters.
This page is an impressive
Colonial collection of non wood ArchPolymerTM balusters. The shape of the
single Colonial baluster was inspired by the traditional bulbous renaissance
baluster taken from the bud of the pomegranate tree. However the
renaissance bulbous balusters were too big for the new world Colonial
style so they were downsized and made simpler.
